Natural Fibre: Celebrating Sabai Grass crafts and more
In today’s world, Natural Fibre has become significant due to its versatility, sustainability and positive impact on industries. Natural fibres are sustainable components that are biodegradable, renewable, and have a lower carbon footprint on the world. Natural fibres are synthesised from three sources: plants, animals, or even minerals. Natural fibre is more durable and environmentally friendly than synthetic fibre. It is essential to create products from traditional materials, as synthetic materials are harming the environment. Natural Fibre has helped make home décor items.
Types of Natural Fibre
Natural fibres extracted from plant fibres that include Cotton, Jute, Bamboo, Banana, Coir, Flax, Hemp, Pineapple, Ramie, Sisal and Sabai grass. Animal fibre comes from sources such as Wool, Silk, Cashmere, Alpaca, Mohair, and Angora. Mineral fibre comes from minerals such as Glass fibre and Asbestos. Natural fibre is commercially used in textiles, rope and twine, paper, building materials, biocomposites, agriculture, automotive, and industrial products. Sabai is a plant fibre renowned for its flexibility and strength, which is used to produce a diverse range of products from tall grass. Natural Fibre home décor includes Sabai Grass craft products, including baskets, wall hangings, planters, utility containers, storage organisers, storage boxes, chapatti boxes, vegetable baskets, and table mats.
Sabai Grass
Sabai grass is a type of grass known for its resilience and versatility. It is tall, slender and grows with dense tufts. It is a hardy grass that flourishes in dry, rocky soil. It grows up to 2 metres in height and thrives in places where other plants cannot. Sabai has been used in fibre production, handicrafts and soil conservation. Sabai grass is a strong fibre, and it is used in the paper industry. Its strength also helps in making artisanal products. Handicraft products made from Sabai grass are the epitome of craftsmanship and cultural heritage, and are renowned in the international market. Sabai grass has an extensive root system, which prevents soil erosion. Therefore, it is a crucial tool for soil conservation, enabling the soil to remain productive and fertile for future generations. Sabai Grass thrives in India, China, Nepal and Pakistan.
History of Sabai Grass in India
In India, Sabai grass is extensively cultivated in Odisha & West Bengal. It is characterised by thin and long leaves that contain high fibre, which serve as a significant source for making handicraft products. Sabai Grass was sourced from Madagascar and then cultivated in Mayurbhanj, Odisha. Maharaja Sri Ram Chandra Bhanj Deo promoted the cultivation of this grass by identifying it as a potential cash crop. Since 1870, Sabai grass has been used to make paper due to its extensive geographical resource and high market demand. This grass yields fibre for around 10 years and can be used with minimal maintenance for an extended period.
Sabai Grass has been extensively used for making rope since World War II due to its high tensile strength. High fibre and low maintenance have helped Sabai grass thrive, and make it superior to jute and coconut ropes. Tribal communities have been cultivating Sabai grass using traditional farming methods and then using it to produce everyday functional items. By 2010, Sabai grass had been used to make various items, such as baskets, jewellery boxes, mats, and furniture, and sold in the market to sustain their livelihood.
