Papier Mache artwork
“Papier Mache is the timeless craft of converting paper pulp into an enduring form which is a fusion of craftsmanship, tradition and creativity.”
Papier-Mâché's artwork uses a combination of Paper and adhesive to make decorative items and sculptures. Little piece of paper is soaked in water, and then glue is added to the Papier Mache pulp. Then, a layer is added over a shape, resulting in the production of a 3D sculpture. When the Paper pulp has been stacked on the object and dried, it is then painted with the desired colour or embellished as desired. Various cultures have utilised papier-mâché artwork due to its affordability and lightweight nature, which makes it a suitable alternative to ceramic or wooden products. Papier Mache art originated in China but later spread to Persia and Japan. It is used to develop ornamental sculptures, cultural relics or functional objects. The papier-mâché art form has an allure of craftsmanship, sustainability, and ingenuity. Due to its cultural significance, Papier Mache artwork has been given GI tag which ensure its authenticity and quality.
Origin of Papier Mache Artwork
Papier-mâché originated in China around 200 BC and then spread to Europe and Asia, evolving into a flexible craft with various styles. After Paper was developed in China, Papier Mache's art came into existence, which led to the development of ceremonial masks, mirror cases, snuff boxes and helmets. Later, it was adopted into Persia, where it was used for decorative boxes, cases and trays, which were later painted and lacquered for protection. In India and Japan, Papier Mache art was used to make decorative items or to embellish on armour & shields. In India, King Zain Ul Abidin brought artists from Persia and Central Asia in the 15th century and introduced Papier Mache artwork in Kashmir. This art was later celebrated under the Mughal Royal Court for its intricate and colourful designs on boxes, furniture, and pen cases.
In Europe, expensive materials such as ivory, metal, and wood are used to make Papier-mâché products. It is used to create decorative panels and furniture to elaborate toys and masks. Papier Mache is used to make different products in different cultures, such as masks in Africa, pinatas in Latin America and Puppets in Southeast Asia.
Techniques and materials
Papier Mache artwork is made from materials such as newspaper, crepe paper and recycled paper. Firstly, the Paper is cut into small pieces or stripes after that white glue or adhesive are added to it. Water is added to paper pieces to create Papier Mache pulp, which is used to make armatures. These armatures can be made from cardboard, wire and objects, and then the shape is provided during construction.
In this process, soaked papers are layered over the armature or framework, and then these layers are dried before more layers are added to it. The layering technique is used to build strength and help an artist to sculpt fine texture and details. Once the whole product is dried and sanded, it is painted in a different colour and sealed to achieve durability. Papier Mache art is considered sustainable as it uses eco-friendly adhesive and recycled Paper.
