Ceramic: Art born from Earth

“Ceramic art is a timeless craft where creativity meets clay, which is shaped by hands and hardened by fire.”

Ceramic Art consists of products which are made from clay and other inorganic materials. These materials are shaped to form functional and artistic items and hardened using fire in a kiln at high temperatures. Ceramic art encompasses a range of functional (pottery) and decorative (sculpture) products. These products are crafted using a variety of techniques, including hand-building, wheel throwing and other firing methods such as Kiln, pit, raku and soda firing. Ceramic art encompasses various forms, including earthenware, porcelain, stoneware, pottery, tableware, sculpture, and tiles. These products are shaped, heated, glazed, and then re-baked to harden them. Regular pottery focuses on the crafting of pots and figurines, while Fine pottery focuses on the decoration and aesthetic of the product. Natriel offers a broad range of Ceramic products that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing for everyday use.

History of Ceramic Art

Ceramic art has a rich history which dates back around 10,000 years. It originated in ancient civilisations such as Mesopotamia, China or Egypt. Early ceramics were primarily used for functional purposes, such as religious rituals, storage, and cooking. As time passed, the Chinese utilised advanced ceramic techniques to develop porcelain during the Tang & Song dynasties. Ceramic was used globally with techniques such as kiln firing or the Potter's wheel. In contemporary times, the use of ceramics has expanded beyond its functional and artistic applications into industrial and technological uses. It is now used in electronics, medical devices, and aerospace, which allows for a blend of ancient craftsmanship with scientific innovation. For example, Ceramics have been used as insulators in computers and smartphones for their electrical resistance. Space shuttle tiles are made from ceramic as they can endure extreme heat when the shuttle re-enters the Earth's atmosphere. Also, Bio-ceramics are used to make Artificial bone or dental implants as they are compatible with human body.

Types of Ceramic Art

Ceramic art encompasses a wide range of products, which have been classified into traditional and modern ceramics. Some of the most common Handmade ceramics are –

  1. Pottery – It is the most commonly used Ceramic art form, traditionally used in every household. It includes objects such as plates, bowls, mugs, and vases, which are both decorative and functional. It can be made from stoneware, porcelain, and earthenware, which is often painted or glazed to enhance its aesthetic appeal.
  2. Tile art – Ceramic tiles are decorated using practices such as glazing, moulding and painting. Ceramic tiles are used in developing architecture to create intricate murals and decorative surfaces for floors, walls, and ceilings. Tile art has been used in Moroccan, Islamic and Spanish design.
  3. Sculpture Ceramic – Ceramic pieces focus on creating artistic expression rather than functional items. They are used in developing abstract shapes, animals, symbolic objects or human figures. Ceramic Clay Sculptures can be found in galleries or used as Indoor or outdoor décor in homes.
  4. Raku Ceramics – Raku is a firing technique from Japan where pottery is removed from the kiln while it is extremely hot, and then it is cooled down rapidly. In this process, crackled glazes are created on the surface. Raku is an organic product which has an unpredictable finish. It is used for making tea bowls and artistic vessels.
  5. Terracotta art- Terracotta ceramics are made from reddish brown clay, which is low-fired and remains unglazed. Terracotta ceramic has been used in the development of pottery, sculpture, and architecture. In India, terracotta ceramics have been popularly used in the making of religious idols, embellishments, and household items.
  6. Porcelain Art – Porcelain is white, delicate and has a translucent quality. It is made from Kaolin, which is a refined clay used in creating intricate figurines, tableware, and luxury ceramics. Porcelain originated from China, which is why it is often referred to as China.
  7. Ceramic installations – Large-scale Ceramic sculpture has been used in making installations in galleries or public spaces. These sculptures explore abstract ideas that challenge the traditional use of ceramics. Modern ceramics blur the line between fine art and craft.
