History and Cultural Significance of Kashmiri Copperware
Kashmiri Copperware has a rich legacy rooted in centuries-old craftsmanship. Kashmiri Copperware is popularly known as “Traam” in Kashmiri, that holds special significance in people’s hearts. This artwork has been passed down through generations, it reflects the rich craftsmanship, cultural heritage and artistic prowess of the region. In the 14th century, it was introduced under the reign of Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin. He encouraged Central and Persian artisans to settle in Kashmir. Over time, this craft became an important part of daily lives in Kashmiri culture and ceremonies.
Traditional Kashmiri utensils such as Samovar, Tashnaer and Lota are beautiful hand engraved copperware items. These are cultural symbols passed down through generations. Every Kashmiri Copperware has been meticulously handcrafted through “Naqashi”, which includes engraving of intricate geometric and floral patterns on the product surface. These products have been used in social and religious ceremonies in Grand Wazwan feasts. Due to industrialization, artisans have faced various challenges, but this art form has sustained Kashmir's rich artistic heritage. This craft has been awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag to renew people's interest in this craft. This craft form has been popular in Zainakadal and Safakadal in the Srinagar area.
Craftsmanship and Technique
For years, these craftsmen have been living in Kashmir, and this art form has been passed down through generations of artists. These artisans shape, engrave and polish products by hand. This process starts from melting and moulding copper sheets and then shaping them into desired forms such as samovars, bowls and trays. Some artisans use hammering techniques to achieve uniform thickness and strength. Skilled artisans used fine chisels to engrave intricate designs on the surface.
Kashmiri Copperware use traditional motifs such as floral patterns, chinar leaves, Arabic calligraphy and paisleys, which are inspired by Persian art. Some items are finished with a thin layer of silver or tin to enhance aesthetics or durability. The final step in the process involves polishing, which gives shine to the handmade copperware. In the age of machine-made alternatives, artisans meticulously handcraft the product to retain its cultural significance and preserve the heritage craft.

 - Dry after washing: After cleaning, the product should be dried immediately to prevent any kind of oxidation and water spots. Otherwise, it will cause greenish discoloration on the product.
 - Polish regularly: Natural cleaners such as lemon and salt will keep your product bright. Regular polishing will prevent any kind of dullness and preserve the product's beauty.
 - Avoid Scrubbers: Don’t use any abrasive scrubbers of steel, as they can scratch the engraving or intricate detailing on these antique pieces.
