Origin of Papier Mache Artwork

Techniques and materials

Papier Mache artwork is made from materials such as newspaper, crepe paper and recycled paper. Firstly, the Paper is cut into small pieces or stripes after that white glue or adhesive are added to it. Water is added to paper pieces to create Papier Mache pulp, which is used to make armatures. These armatures can be made from cardboard, wire and objects, and then the shape is provided during construction.

In this process, soaked papers are layered over the armature or framework, and then these layers are dried before more layers are added to it. The layering technique is used to build strength and help an artist to sculpt fine texture and details. Once the whole product is dried and sanded, it is painted in a different colour and sealed to achieve durability.
