Terracotta Art
Introduction
Terracotta word is derived from two words – Terra (earth) and cotta (cooked). This art form is used to make objects such as sculptures, pottery and architectural elements from fired clay. Terracotta is known for its warm earthy tones, versatility and durability. Terracotta clay is different from regular clay as it is heated in kiln which give it reddish brown colour with porous texture. Iron oxide in the clay reacts with oxygen then converted into reddish brown after being burned in the Kiln. Natriel offers terracotta pots, planters and toys for its customers.
Origin of Terracotta Art
Terracotta origins dates back into Indus valley civilisation where early men moulded figurine, seals and toys from clay. Terracotta was at peak in Mauryan and Gupta era due to its practical use and applicability. Terracotta has roots in Rajasthan, Bihar, Gujrat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Bengal. With time, Terracotta is evolved and has become part of social and spiritual life.
In early civilisation, Terracotta was found in Mesopotamia, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome and China. In Ancient Greece, Terracotta figurines are used as offerings in rituals while pottery and other practical products were made in Ancient Egypt. Terracotta is famous in modern times from tiny figures to architectural components.
Crafting process of Terracotta Art
- Assemble materials: Firstly, products used for making terracotta are assembled such as clay, kiln, glazing and tools. Clay is kneaded and wedged to remove air bubbles and achieve uniform texture. After that the clay is moulded to get desired shape using hands and other tools.
- Drying clay- After the clay is shaped and then it is completely dried. The drying process takes time based on its thickness and size, so it can take days or even weeks. After the product is dried then it is burned in the Kiln so it becomes sturdy. The Kiln must be heated at 900 to 1200 °C to make products hard but the temperature varies based on the thickness of the product.
- Glazing product- Glaze is applied to every piece to give it texture and colour. Later, it is again put in the Kiln.
- Finishing process – At last when product comes out of the Kiln then the product is sanded, buffed or even polished to get smooth surface with polished look.
