The Mughals introduced brass craft to India in the 16th century, and the city quickly became a centre for production. The industry flourished in the 18th century due to orders from the British East India Company and further developed under Nawab Murad Ali, who supported local artisans and intricate designs. Today, Moradabad is a leading brass manufacturer, with over 4,000 metal businesses employing more than 100,000 workers, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern designs.
Manufacturing Process
- Design and Planning :
- Conceptualization Artists and designers create sketches and detailed plans for the metalware
- Pattern Making Patterns or templates are made to guide the crafting process
- Material Selection :
- Choosing Metals Metals such as Aluminum brass copper silver or gold are selected based on the desired final product
- Quality Check Ensuring the purity and quality of the chosen metal
- Melting and Casting :
- Melting The metal is melted in a furnace at high temperatures
- Casting The molten metal is poured into molds to form basic shapes This can be done using various methods like sand casting lost-wax casting or die casting
- Forging and Shaping :
- Heating The metal is reheated to make it malleable
- Hammering Artisans hammer the metal into the desired shape using anvils and hammers
- Annealing The metal is repeatedly heated and cooled to increase its workability
- Cutting and Filing :
- Cutting Excess metal is removed and the piece is cut to its rough shape using saws and shears
- Filing Files and rasps are used to smooth rough edges and refine the shape
- Engraving and Embossing :
