Preserving Cultural Tradition

Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, known as "Pital Nagri" or "Brass City," has a rich legacy in brass manufacturing that dates back over 5,000 years. The Mughals introduced brass craft to India in the 16th century, and the city quickly became a centre for production. The industry flourished in the 18th century due to orders from the British East India Company and further developed under Nawab Murad Ali, who supported local artisans and intricate designs. Today, Moradabad is a leading brass manufacturer, with over 4,000 metal businesses employing more than 100,000 workers, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern designs.

Manufacturing Process

  • Selection of Material – First, high-quality Brass is selected as the material for the desired product.
  • Melting and Casting – Brass material is then melted at a high temperature in a furnace. Later, molten metal is poured into a mould to give it a basic shape of teapot body, spout, handle, cups, and saucers. It is accomplished through sand casting, lost wax casting, or die casting.
  • Forging and Shaping – The metal is then heated, so it becomes malleable. The artisans hammer the product into the desired shape using an anvil. Then, the metal is heated and cooled to increase its workability.
  • Cutting & Filing – Next, excess metal is cut and removed using shears and a saw. Then, files and rasps are used to smooth the rough edges and give them shape.
  • Engraving & Embossing – The product is then engraved with intricate floral and geometric motifs on the surface using engraving tools. A hammer is used to emboss a pattern on the surface from the reverse side.
  • Joining & Assembly – The pieces of handle, spout, and lid are then joined together using solder. Metal pins are used to connect the parts of the product.
  • Polishing & Finishing – The rough surface is smoothened using grinding tools. Then, it is polished using various compounds to achieve an antique golden finish.

Note

  • Each product is meticulously handcrafted, so slight variations in color or form highlight its uniqueness and should not be viewed as defects.
