Preserving Cultural Tradition
Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, known as "Pital Nagri" or "Brass City," has a rich legacy in brass manufacturing that dates back over 5,000 years. The Mughals introduced brass craft to India in the 16th century, and the city quickly became a centre for production. The industry flourished in the 18th century due to orders from the British East India Company and further developed under Nawab Murad Ali, who supported local artisans and intricate designs. Today, Moradabad is a leading brass manufacturer, with over 4,000 metal businesses employing more than 100,000 workers, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern designs.
Manufacturing Process
- Wax/Clay Model Creation for Casting: A wax or clay model of the owl is created according to the desired size, detailing, and posture.
- Mold Making: The model is coated with a sand-based or ceramic material to form a mold. After hardening, the wax is melted, leaving an owl-shaped cavity.
- Melting of Brass: Brass is melted in a furnace to prepare for casting.
- Casting: The molten brass is poured into the prepared mold. Once cooled, the mold is broken to extract the raw brass casting.
- Cleaning & Deburring: The rough brass casting is cleaned using sandblasting or wire brushes. Extra metal is removed and sharp edges are smoothed.
- Detailing & Engraving: Skilled artisans engrave fine details into the owl, enhancing its features and overall appearance.
- Polishing: The owl is polished to give it a shiny, antique finish.
