Icon PreservingTimeless Traditions

The Dhokra art of Chhattisgarh has a rich history spanning over 4,000 years, reflecting the legacy of the Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro civilisations. The dancing girl of Mohenjo-Daro is among the most renowned examples of this craft worldwide. With its origins tied to the term "dhokna," meaning to cast, this tradition employs the ancient lost-wax technique. The craft ensures that each piece is hand-moulded for a unique product, resisting the culture of mass production. Artisans from the Ghadwa community create intricate works inspired by nature, mythology, and local deities. These creations are distinguished by their slender forms and coiled designs, showcasing a rich heritage that continues to thrive in villages like Ektaal and Bastar.

Icon Manufacturing Process

  • Making the Core: Using coarse clay, the artisan begins by shaping a rough core resembling the final piece. This clay core is then hardened by either sun-drying or mildly firing it in an oven.
  • Creating Artwork: This stage defines the artistic quality of the piece. Natural beeswax is drawn into thin wires and strips, which are then wrapped around the clay core to form a smooth, expressive form. The wax is often mixed with dhuna (the resinous gum of the sal tree) and boiled in mustard oil to create a consistent mixture.
  • Coating with Fine Clay: A thin layer of fine, wet clay is applied over the wax replica, capturing every intricate detail. Once dried in the sun, additional clay layers are added to form the mould. A clay funnel is attached, allowing molten metal to flow into the mould.
  • Heating and Wax Removal: The mould is carefully heated to melt and remove the wax, leaving behind a cavity – the essence of the lost-wax technique.
  • Metal Casting: Molten metal, mostly brass, is poured into the cavity, and the mould is left to cool.
  • Final Touches: After cooling, the clay mould is broken to reveal the newly created artifact, which is then cleaned and polished, bringing a masterpiece to life from metal scrap.
