History of Dhokra Art
India's rich culture, traditions, and artistic expressions are admired globally, with handwoven silks, pottery, sculpture, and more showcasing its heritage. Handcrafted products, known for their intricate designs, reflect the dedication of Indian artisans who cherish authenticity and traditional methods. What sets Indian enthusiasts of handmade products apart is their unwavering commitment to preserving these crafts, not just locally, but also on the global stage. Dhokra Art, an ancient technique from Bastar, Chhattisgarh, uses lost-wax casting to craft stunning items that depict tribal life, deities, and mythical creatures. This non-ferrous metal art is celebrated in India and beyond.
Manufacturing Process
- Creating a core: A core, slightly smaller than the desired object, is made from clay, dried in the sun, and then coated with wax.
- Creating the mould: A mould is shaped by hand using a mixture of local clay and rice chaff, often resembling a deity, animal, or everyday item.
- Applying a wax design: A thin clay layer is applied over the wax design, followed by additional layers until the mould is sufficiently thick and firm.
- Casting: Molten brass is poured into the mould.
- Cooling and finishing: Once cooled, the clay mould is broken, and the metal object is polished, filed, and burnished.
