Icon Preserving Cultural Tradition

Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, known as "Pital Nagri" or "Brass City," has a rich legacy in brass manufacturing that dates back over 5,000 years. The Mughals introduced brass craft to India in the 16th century, and the city quickly became a centre for production. The industry flourished in the 18th century due to orders from the British East India Company and further developed under Nawab Murad Ali, who supported local artisans and intricate designs. Today, Moradabad is a leading brass manufacturer, with over 4,000 metal businesses employing more than 100,000 workers, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern designs.

Icon Manufacturing Process

  • Design and pattern making – Firstly, artists will make a detailed sketch or clay model of the desired idol. They will make sure to define proportions with intricate detailing to guide the process of casting.
  • Wax Modelling – Next step is to handcraft a wax replica of the desired idol while capturing fine detailing, adding contour and ornamenting.
  • Mould preparation – Later, this wax model will be coated with numerous layers of fine clay, which will become the hard outer shell of the product. After it is dried, it will become mould for the process of metal casting.
  • Wax removal – Next step consists of heating the mould, which will melt the wax and drain it, leaving a hollow cavity of the idol shape, which is known as the lost wax casting technique.
  • Brass casting – After that, molten brass is poured into the clay, then cooled down to take the form of the mould and the desired idol.
  • Finishing and polishing – Then the clay mould is broken and then cleaned, filed and polished. Artisans hand-finish every feature of the product to get smoothness and precision. At last, a glossy finish is applied to the idol and coated with lacquer so it doesn’t tarnish.

Icon Note

  • Each product is meticulously handcrafted, so slight variations in colour or form feature its uniqueness and should not be viewed as defects.
  • Images may differ from the actual product in form and colour due to variations in screen resolutions and device settings.
  • Use a soft and dry cloth to dust brass products to prevent any grime buildup on the surface.
  • Use lemon juice, vinegar, or baking soda to remove tarnish from the product.
