Icon Preserving Timeless Traditions of Craftsmanship

Jaipur blue pottery, introduced to India by Persian artisans in the 14th century, initially featured cobalt blue dye and intricate designs. The craft evolved significantly under Mughal Emperor Akbar, blending Persian and Mughal aesthetics. By the 19th century, Jaipur’s Sawai Ram Singh II played a crucial role in localising the craft, inviting Persian artisans to adapt their techniques with local materials. This led to the development of vibrant colours and distinctive patterns of Jaipur’s blue pottery, establishing it as a renowned symbol of the city’s cultural heritage.

Icon Manufacturing Process

  • Preparing the Slurry: A smooth mixture of ceramic powder, water, and dispersing agents is created, forming a lump-free slurry for uniform casting.
  • Filling the Mould: The slurry is poured into a porous plaster mould, which absorbs water, allowing the clay to solidify along the mould’s surface.
  • Formation of the Cast: As the mould absorbs moisture, a clay layer forms, with its thickness depending on how long the slurry remains inside.
  • Draining: Once the desired thickness is reached, the excess slurry is drained, leaving the shaped clay cast inside.
  • Partial Drying: The cast is left in the mould to dry partially, giving the diya enough strength to handle while remaining fragile.
  • Plugging and Separating: After partial drying, the diya is carefully removed from the mould, with rough edges trimmed for refinement.
  • Final Drying: The diyas are left to fully dry, preparing them for painting and finishing.
  • Hand-Painting: Artisans hand-paint each diya with vibrant colours and patterns, followed by a protective matte finish to enhance their beauty.

Icon Note

  • Handle with Care: Blue pottery is delicate and can break easily. Clean with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive materials and harsh chemicals as they may damage the surface.
  • Avoid Extreme Temperatures: Do not expose to extreme temperatures, as rapid changes can cause cracking. Also, avoid using it in a microwave and dishwasher.
  • Handcrafted Variations: Each product may feature slight variations in colour or craftsmanship, which add to its uniqueness and should not be seen as defects.
  • Image Discrepancies: Due to variations in screen resolutions, images may differ from the actual product.
