Preserving Timeless Traditions of Craftsmanship
Firozabad, the renowned glass city of India, boasts a glass-making heritage that stretches back over the centuries, rooted in the era of Mughals. The stunning glassware crafted here once graced the royal courts, symbolising elegance and luxury. Through the years, this vibrant industry has produced a wide variety of glass products, becoming a beloved choice for embellishing royal celebrations and weddings alike. The craft over the period of years has contemporaries itself to today’s needs and demands.
Manufacturing Process
- Melting and Cutting: The process of creating glass products begins with heating the glass at a high temperature. As it melts, artisans skillfully use a shearing blade to cut it into a cylindrical form known as a gob.
- Moulding: Once cut, the gob gently falls by gravity into the mould, which is a die designed to give the glass its final form.
- Shaping: With a soft breath, the artisan blows air into a hollow pipe, causing the glass to expand and take form according to the mould, transforming it into a product.
- Cooling the Mould: After the shaping process, the mould is carefully cooled. This ensures that the glass maintains its form as it starts to solidify.
- Removing the Product: Once sufficiently cooled, the product is carefully taken out of the mould and left to cool further.
- Solidification and Annealing: The product shrinks and solidifies after cooling. Uneven cooling can create weakness and breakage in the piece, so the annealing process is used for product durability.
