Preserving Timeless Traditions of Craftsmanship
Channapatna toys have a rich history dating back to the 18th century when Tipu Sultan invited Persian artisans to train local artisans. These toys are crafted from locally sourced softwood and coloured with natural dyes, while lacquer, derived from the lacquer tree, is applied to give them a glossy finish. The most significant feature of Channapatna toys is their smooth, rounded shapes and eco-friendly, chemical-free materials, making them safe and ideal for children. Today, Channapatna toys are appreciated globally for their sustainable craftsmanship and contemporary designs, with government support ensuring the preservation of this cherished art form in Karnataka's "Toy Town."
Manufacturing Process
- Sourcing and Shaping of Wood: The process begins with sourcing unseasoned wood from local suppliers, which is naturally seasoned by the artisans. Once seasoned, the wood is cut and shaped on a lathe to form the base of the product. The shaped wood is then further refined and smoothed, preparing an ideal surface for the application of colour.
- Preparation of Colours: The most striking feature of Channapatna toys is their vivid, natural colours, free from toxins and harmful chemicals, making them highly suitable for children. These colours are meticulously prepared by artisans using vegetable dyes and organic sources such as turmeric, indigo, and natural extracts. This eco-conscious approach resonates globally, particularly with families seeking sustainable, child-safe products.
- Lacquering and Finishing: The polished appearance of Channapatna toys is achieved through a combination of natural lacquer, a resin derived from tree sap, and the extracted natural dyes, which are moulded into colour sticks. Artisans apply the lacquer sticks while the piece rotates on a lathe. The heat generated by friction ensures the colour is evenly distributed. A dried palm leaf is then used to smooth the surface, giving the toy its characteristic glossy finish. This step enhances durability while celebrating a chemical-free approach to craftsmanship.
- Final Assembly and Decoration: The final stage involves assembling the carved and lacquered components into complete toys. Artisans often add delicate embellishments and surface detailing, giving each toy a unique character. The simplicity of the designs, paired with vibrant colours and a smooth finish, makes these toys beloved collectibles worldwide.
