About the craft
In the tribal regions of Orissa and West Bengal, sabai grass, traditionally known as bobei ghasa, was once used solely for rope-making. Over time, however, this natural fibre has experienced a transformation, finding its way into homes through a wide range of beautifully crafted, eco-friendly products. The evolution of this craft has empowered women from tribal communities, who meticulously weave these sustainable fibres into modern household items, blending age-old techniques with contemporary design.
Manufacturing Process
- Material Selection: Select sabai grass, date palm leaves, and colourful cotton threads with necessary tools for smooth and efficient crafting.
- Preparing the Sabai Grass: The sabai grass is soaked in water to soften it, making it flexible and easy to weave into the desired forms for the product.
- Weaving Process: Once softened, the sabai grass is woven around the date palm leaves, which act as a sturdy base. During the weaving, colourful cotton threads are artfully incorporated to add decorative patterns and enhance the product's aesthetic.
- Colouring and Decoration: For coloured designs, natural dyes are used to treat the grass either before or after weaving, ensuring the colours are eco-friendly and vibrant, while adding a unique touch to each product.
- Shaping and Detailing: As the weaving progresses, the product takes its final shape, whether it be a basket or wall décor. The ends are secured tightly, and any excess material is trimmed to create a neat, polished finish.
- Finishing Touches: The completed product is carefully inspected for quality, with rough edges smoothed and dyed pieces left to dry. Once final checks are done, the product is ready for packaging or additional decorative touches like beads or other embellishments.
