Preserving timeless tradition of Craftsmanship
Bidri is a timeless craft from Bidar, Karnataka, which features silver and gold inlay work on a matte black surface. This art is inspired by Persian, Arabic and Turkish design and flourished by the Bahamani sultanate. Bidri art is used for decorating palaces, creating ceremonial objects, and making everyday items. Bidri was once associated with royalty, so it is a symbol of artistic excellence, wealth, and prestige.
Manufacturing Process
- Melting alloy – First, soil moulds are made using resin and castor oil. A combination of zinc (95%) and copper (5%) is heated at 800 degrees Fahrenheit and then poured into the mould. As it cools, the resulting cast is polished using buffing and filing to achieve a smooth finish.
- Casting – Once the product is smoothed, the resultant piece is preserved using a copper sulphate solution, which creates a temporary black coating. After that, artisans etch intricate designs on the black matte surface of the object using a stylus.
- Engraving & inlaying – Small chisels are used to engrave the object on wax stone. The artists use silver sheets and wires as required to hammer them onto the product to display geometric patterns and floral motifs.
- Oxidising process – The product is then dipped into a solution of ammonium chloride and Bidri soil. It darkens the surface of the product but preserves the silver, creating a striking contrast. Finally, an oil coating is applied to the product to achieve a matte finish.
