Icon Preserving cultural tradition and craftsmanship

Brass has a rich history which spans over 5000 years, with artefacts found in Europe and the Middle East. Brass product mainly comes from the Moradabad cluster, which is in UP, which is popularly known as Brass City. Mughals promoted Brass production in India in the 16th century, which had significant Persian influences. However, it flourished under the East India Company in the 18th century under Nawab Murad Ali, who supported local artists and Brass production. The Moradabad cluster has 4,000 metal businesses and 100,000 workers that blend conventional craftsmanship with contemporary design.

Icon Manufacturing Process

  • Selection of Material: First, Brass is selected as the material for the desired product.
  • Melting and Casting: Brass material is then melted at a high temperature in a furnace. Later, molten metal is poured into a mould to give it a basic shape. It is accomplished through sand casting, lost wax casting, or die casting.
  • Forging and Shaping: The metal is then heated so it becomes malleable. The artisans hammer the product into the desired shape using an anvil. Then, the metal is heated and cooled to increase its workability.
  • Cutting & Filing: Next, excess metal is cut and removed using shears and saw. Then, files and rasps are used to smooth the rough edges and give them a shape.
  • Engraving & Embossing: The product is then engraved with intricate designs on the surface using engraving tools. A hammer is used to emboss a pattern on the surface from the reverse side.
  • Joining & Assembly: The pieces are then joined together using solder. Metal pins are used to enter the parts of the product.
  • Polishing & Finishing: The rough surface is smoothened using grinding tools. Then, it is polished using various compounds to achieve a shiny finish.

Icon Note

  • Use a soft and dry cloth to dust brass products to prevent any type of grime buildup on the surface.
  • Use lemon juice, vinegar, or baking soda to remove tarnish from the product.
  • The image may appear differently from the actual product in terms of colour and form due to variations in device settings and screen resolution.
  • Each product may have a slight change in craftsmanship or colour, which makes them beautiful and unique.
