Icon Preserving timeless craftsmanship and Technique

Pacchikari Stone inlay technique was brought to India in the 17th century from Persia. Mughal King Shah Jahan decided to build a Mausoleum in memory of her beloved wife Mumtaj Mahal. Pacchikari is practiced in Agra's Taj Ganj by skilled artisans who are descendants of the artists who built the Taj Mahal. The Pacchikari technique is a stone inlay method that involves setting marble and semi-precious stones on a stone base in a geometric pattern. In this Technique, floral patterns are designed and then transferred to brass foil, which is later used as stencils. Semiprecious stones, such as Red Omaze and Baroda Green stones are inlaid on the Marble to give it a unique design. Pacchikari is a true testament to the rich heritage of Agra, which has been passed down through generations of families.

Icon Manufacturing Process

  • Selection of Material – First, marble and semi-precious stones are selected. Then, the floral design is drawn on paper and traced onto the marble slab surface.
  • Carving Marble Base – Skilled artisans engrave shallow cavities on the surface of marble using a fine chisel and follow the design outline. These grooves are where semi-precious stones are inlaid into the marble.
  • Shaping Inlay Stone – Semi-precious stones such as Red Omaze and Baroda Green stones are cut and then shaped to fit into the engraved spaces.
  • Setting the Stones – These stones are shaped and later put into marble grooves using special adhesive. The golden lining inside is done using brass.
  • Smoothing and Polishing – Once the stones are set, they are polished and smoothed, allowing the inlay and marble to become unified. This helps bring out the natural shine of semi-precious stones and marble.
  • Final Finishing – A final polish is applied to the piece to add detail and luster to the product.

Icon Note

  • This product is delicate, so store it safely to prevent breakage from falls.

  • This product is handcrafted from natural white marble, which may exhibit natural patterns and subtle variations. These variations add to its uniqueness and authenticity.
