History of Dhokra Art

Dhokra art is an ancient metal casting technique which is around 4000 years old. It has been crafted using the lost wax technique, where every piece is made by hand. The process starts using a wax model, and then it is cast in a clay mould and finally it is cast. The process has been passed down through generations of skilled artisans in areas such as Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha. Dhokra art is a true testament of cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship.

Manufacturing Process

  • Creation of a Wax model: At first, the artisan creates a detailed model through beeswax, which is made with nut oil and resin.
  • Clay Modelling: After that, the wax model is coated with riverbed clay to make a strong outer shell.
  • Removing Wax: After that, the lost wax technique is used, in which the clay model is heated at high temperatures. It causes wax to melt and drain out of any hollow cavity.
  • Molten Metal casting: After that, molten brass is poured into the cavity to shape it.
  • Breaking mould: Once the Brass is cooled, it is broken, and later, the raw metal figure emerges from the cavity.
  • Finishing touches: At last, the finished piece is polished to get a golden shine. Then at last, the figures are put in the frame.
