Preserving Cultural Tradition

Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, known as "Pital Nagri" or "Brass City," has a rich legacy in brass manufacturing that dates back over 5,000 years. The Mughals introduced brass craft to India in the 16th century, and the city quickly became a centre for production. The industry flourished in the 18th century due to orders from the British East India Company and further developed under Nawab Murad Ali, who supported local artisans and intricate designs. Today, Moradabad is a leading brass manufacturer, with over 4,000 metal businesses employing more than 100,000 workers, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern designs.

Manufacturing Process

  • Designing
    • Concept Creation: Artisans begin by developing a design, often inspired by traditional patterns or modern trends.
    • Pattern Making: Detailed patterns are drawn to guide the production process.
  • Casting
    • Mold Preparation: Molds are created from sand or clay based on the design patterns.
    • Melting Brass: Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, is melted in a furnace.
    • Pouring: The molten brass is carefully poured into the molds to form the basic shape.
    • Cooling: The cast brass is left to cool and solidify.
  • Shaping and Trimming
    • Removing from Mold: Once cooled, the brass items are removed from the molds.
    • Trimming: Excess material and rough edges are trimmed to refine the shape.
  • Hammering and Forming
    • Hand Hammering: Skilled artisans use hammers to shape and smooth the brass, adding intricate details.
    • Annealing: The brass is heated and cooled to make it easier to work with.
  • Engraving and Embossing
    • Hand Engraving: Artisans use fine tools to engrave detailed designs onto the brass surface.
    • Embossing: Techniques are used to create raised patterns on the brass.
  • Polishing
    • Initial Polishing: The brass is polished manually to smooth the surface.
    • Final Polishing: Fine abrasives and compounds, like color buffing, achieve a high-gloss finish.
  • Enameling (Minakari)
    • Applying Enamel: Vibrant enamel colors are applied to the engraved designs.
    • Firing: The item is fired in a kiln to fuse the enamel with the brass.
    • Finishing Touches: Additional polishing ensures a smooth, glossy finish.
  • Quality Control
    • Inspection: Each item is carefully inspected for quality and accuracy.
    • Adjustments: Final touch-ups are made as needed.
