Manufacturing Process
- Preparing the Slurry: A smooth mixture of ceramic powder, water, and dispersing agents is created, forming a lump-free slurry for uniform casting.
- Filling the Mould: The slurry is poured into a porous plaster mould, which absorbs water, allowing the clay to solidify along the mould’s surface.
- Formation of the Cast: As the mould absorbs moisture, a clay layer forms, with its thickness depending on how long the slurry remains inside.
- Draining: Once the desired thickness is reached, the excess slurry is drained, leaving the shaped clay cast inside.
- Partial Drying: The cast is left in the mould to dry partially, giving the diya enough strength to handle while remaining fragile.
- Plugging and Separating: After partial drying, the diya is carefully removed from the mould, with rough edges trimmed for refinement.
- Final Drying: The diyas are left to fully dry, preparing them for painting and finishing.
- Hand-Painting: Artisans hand-paint each diya with vibrant colours and patterns, followed by a protective matte finish to enhance their beauty.
